May Update Brings Remote Max Battles to Pokémon GO
Niantic is bringing major gameplay updates to Pokémon GO this month, introducing two highly anticipated features: Remote Shadow Raids and Max Battles. These changes are designed to give Trainers more flexibility and new ways to engage with some of the game’s toughest content.
Beginning May 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. PDT, Trainers will be able to join Shadow Raids remotely for the first time. This means players can take on powerful Shadow Pokémon from anywhere using a Remote Raid Pass. The update arrives alongside the Crown Clash: Taken Over event, but it will remain in effect even after the event ends. In addition to this change, the daily Remote Raid limit is increasing from five to ten. This expansion applies to all remote raids, including both Shadow Raids and standard Raid Battles, making it easier to participate in more challenges throughout the day.
Just a few days later, on May 19, 2025, another big feature will roll out. Max Battles, a new raid format that offers high-intensity gameplay, will go live, and Trainers will also be able to join them remotely. To participate, players will need both a Remote Raid Pass and the standard number of Max Particles. The particle cap is also increasing from 999 to 1,500, giving players more room to prepare for these larger-scale battles. This update is launching right before the Gigantamax Machamp Max Battle Day event and will continue as a permanent feature in the game.
These updates are especially meaningful for players who live in rural areas, have mobility challenges, or simply prefer the convenience of playing from home. By expanding remote play options and increasing raid limits, Niantic is making high-level gameplay more accessible to a wider audience.
If you’re looking to get the most out of these updates, now is the time to stock up on Remote Raid Passes and start building teams that can handle both Shadow threats and Max-level challenges. With new strategies and battle formats on the horizon, May 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic months in recent Pokémon GO history.
